BMW is honoring one of the most celebrated cars in its history, the 3.0 CSL. Drawing from the CSL heritage, CSL standing for coupé, sport, lightweight, the Hommage model boasts lightweight construction and materials and is even 200 kg lighter than the original model.
In the ’70s the lightweight material of choice was aluminum and today the car’s construction achieves those same characteristics with carbon fiber reinforced plastics that aren’t just stronger, but lighter as well.
As with the original, aerodynamics was also a big focus with a roof and rear spoiler combo and prominent wheel arches. Power comes from an in-line six with eBoost which sits under a aggressively styled front end complete with a tall, upright kidney grille, laser light and LED lighting, and a carbon fiber front splitter.
BMW also takes the lightweight focus to the interior with an inside wrapped in CFRP and every interior element has a purpose. From the wooden-inspired instrument panel that provides a structural element and is also inspired by the wooden trim from the original CSL.
